This project is an independent undertaking at GE Appliances to redesign their outdated AC remotes. I received approval to work on this as a side project and developed the designs from sketch to appearance model. The concepts include one conventional approach, and one to challenge the current way we use remotes.
A fresh look at controlling temperature.
OVERVIEW
Preceding and current models.
Concept 1.
Designed to revamp the old remotes with emphasis on a slim form factor, curved top profile and rubberized buttons. The underside of the remote has embedded magnets for mounting, and a 3-stage rocker profile to help users grasp the remote edges when picking up from a surface.
User Interface.
Focusing on minimal text and iconography - this interfaced is designed to let you focus on the relevant information for what is being modified. Each adjustment rocker has its own corresponding screen, which defaults back to the current temperature for an idle screen. The display is set behind a curved lens profile to give the appearance of depth.
Concept 2.
A new look at remotes, essentially converting them into mobile thermostats. This concept is meant to live on your wall, coffee table, night stand, etc. and function as the central controller for your house's heating and cooling appliances. This design reflects the features of the first concept, with drafted edges to make picking it up and magnetic detachment easier.
User Interface.
Focusing on minimal text and iconography consistent with the first concept. Labeled buttons cycle their specific function, while maintaining visual read and control of the current temperature with the +/- buttons.
